What is a Bunion?

A bunion (medically known as hallux valgus) occurs when the joint at the base of the big toe shifts out of alignment. This condition causes the big toe to lean toward the second toe, resulting in a bony bump on the side of the foot.

Bunions often lead to discomfort and swelling, especially when wearing shoes with a narrow toe box or unsupportive soles. Bunions can also occur on the little toe and are sometimes called bunionettes or tailor’s bunions.

Who Can Get a Bunion?

Bunions can affect anyone, but they are more prevalent in:

  • Women, particularly those who frequently wear high-heeled shoes or tight footwear.
  • Individuals with flat feet, as this foot structure increases stress on the toe joint.
  • Adolescents or older adults with a family history of foot deformities.
  • Athletes who may experience repetitive foot injuries or stress to the first and second toes.

Our Specialties

Causes of Bunions

Several factors contribute to the development of bunions, including the following:

  • Genetics: A hereditary predisposition to flat feet or misaligned toe joints.
  • Improper footwear: Prolonged use of shoes with a narrow toe box or poor arch support.
  • Stress and overuse: Athletes and active individuals may accelerate the development of bunions due to excessive strain on the feet.

Symptoms of Bunions

Bunions can cause a range of symptoms, including the following:

  • A bony bump at the base of the big toe.
  • Redness, swelling, or tenderness around the affected area.
  • Persistent bunion pain, especially when walking or wearing shoes.
  • Difficulty moving the big toe or overlapping of the second toe.
  • Corns or calluses that develop on the first and second toes.

When to See a Podiatrist

If you have developed a bunion, then you should seek professional care. Bunions left untreated will get worse with time. You should consult a podiatrist if you experience:

  • Chronic pain or difficulty walking.
  • Inflammation or redness that doesn’t subside.
  • Reduced range of motion in your big toe.
  • Persistent issues despite efforts to wear supportive shoes or use other conservative treatments.

Our podiatry services at Precision Orthopaedic Specialties are designed to address all types of foot and ankle concerns, including bunions, with personalized treatment plans tailored to your needs.

How Are Bunions Identified?

During a podiatric evaluation, a specialist will examine your foot structure and alignment. Diagnostic tests may include:

  • A physical exam to assess the severity of the bony bump and its impact on mobility.
  • Imaging, such as X-rays, to determine the extent of joint damage and alignment issues.
  • A gait analysis to evaluate how walking patterns affect the toe joint and surrounding areas.

Treatment Options for Bunions

Treatment for bunions focuses on alleviating pain and preventing further progression. Depending on the severity, options may include:

Non-Surgical Treatments

Non-surgical treatments can help prevent bunions from getting worse and relieve some of the pain. Non-surgical treatments include the following:

  • Wear supportive shoes: Opt for wide-toe box designs and cushioned insoles.
  • Shoe inserts: Custom orthotics can redistribute pressure and provide arch support.
  • Padding and taping: Relieves pressure on the bunion and corrects alignment.
  • Physical therapy: Exercises to improve joint flexibility and strength.

Surgical Treatments

If conservative measures fail to provide relief, bunion surgery may be recommended. The procedure realigns the big toe and corrects structural issues, restoring function and reducing pain.
